The Cinematic Room starts at $2,200. This project was quoted above that starting price: the scope included a measured millwork drawing set — scaled plans and dimensioned elevations for all three layouts, detailed for a cabinet shop to build from. Custom millwork documentation is always priced per project.

Modern Heritage, made multifunctional.

This room shifts gracefully between three modes: productive office, relaxed listening lounge and serene guest suite. A wall-to-wall satin black built-in gives it architectural presence and conceals a queen Murphy bed at its center. Natural wood, textured upholstery and warm aged-brass hardware balance the depth of the millwork. Arched shelving brings a tailored, collected quality, while a dedicated record-player niche keeps the room feeling personal rather than purely practical.

One wall, three ways to use it.

The key decision here isn't the look — all three schemes speak the same material language. It's how the room gets worked in. Option 1 offers the strongest symmetry and the calmest guest mode. Option 2 creates the most independent daily workstations. Option 2.5 provides the longest shared surface, integrated record storage and the most relaxed lounge character. Each is drawn to scale in plan and elevation, so a millworker can quote from it directly.

The room, in motion.

A still rendering shows you a corner. The walkthrough shows you the change — the moment the built-in stops being an office and becomes a bedroom. On a multifunctional room it's the clearest way to judge whether the idea actually works before a single panel is cut.

How the room should feel, hour by hour.

Lighting

Clear natural daylight for focused work. At dusk, shift to warm integrated shelf lighting and a low-glare task lamp. In guest mode, keep the built-in softly illuminated rather than fully lit.

Acoustics

A wool rug, full drapery and upholstered lounge seating soften calls, music and overnight use. Felt pads inside the cabinet doors quiet the daily operation of the millwork.

Tactile layer

Balance the satin black millwork with warm wood, washed linen, nubby upholstery and one soft throw. The room should feel tailored, never severe.

Scent

Room rituals

Morning: open the desk, turn on the task lighting, clear the lounge zone. Evening: close the technology away, lower the lighting, play a record. Guest arrival: open the Murphy bed, add fresh linen, and put water and a charging cable within reach.

Every Cinematic Room ships with a soundtrack scored for the mood of the finished space — the one you'd actually put on while you're in it. It starts when this page opens, and the control in the corner of the screen stops and restarts it whenever you like.

Contractor notes

Desk + shelf heights

Desktop at approximately 29–30 in. AFF, first shelf at approximately 54 in. AFF.

Case dimensions

12 in. finished case depth, case top at roughly 106–107 in. AFF, with 4–5 in. of crown and scribe up to the 112 in. ceiling.

Pocket doors

Two-leaf bifold pocket doors at each workstation, targeting a 39 in. clear opening and 2.25 in. pockets, on flipper slides with 35 mm cup hinges and soft-close.

Murphy bed

Locate the handles over a reinforced frame strut, roughly 18–20 in. down from the top edge of the face panel.

Lighting + cables

A 1 in. underside valance with LED tape set 1 in. back, plus a cable grommet or a 3/4 in. rear-apron slot at each station.

Before fabrication

Every dimension and hardware condition is verified on site first. The drawings communicate design intent, not as-built conditions.

The final layer, placed with intention.

The record-player niche

The detail that keeps the room from reading as pure utility. It should feel useful, collected and uncluttered — never like vinyl-storage Tetris.

• —Keep the turntable on the left and the styling cluster on the right, with clearance above and behind for the lid to open fully.
• —Display one current album on a slim brass stand, and stack the record-covers book flat beside the turntable.
• —Use the wooden organizer for the remote, the record brush and small audio accessories.
• —Group the marble and glass candleholders together but vary their heights — and keep them unlit near records and electronics.
• —Leave roughly 30% of the console surface open, and store the rest of the collection inside it.

The built-in shelves

Nine feet of open shelving is the fastest way to make a tailored room look cluttered, so the book styles it by ratio rather than by object list.

• —Keep roughly 35–40% of each shelf visually open.
• —Use one muted landscape as the primary focal point, then mix vertical books with short horizontal stacks.
• —Set small objects on top of book stacks to vary height, repeating warm taupe pottery, aged brass and dark sculptural forms.
• —Limit greenery to one or two trailing plants across the whole built-in.
• —Balance visual weight across the two sides rather than styling every shelf symmetrically, and keep the shelves nearest the desks especially restrained.
• —Light it warm, around 2700K.

Art specifications

• —Primary artwork at 30 × 40 in. or 36 × 48 in., spanning roughly two-thirds of the furniture width below it.
• —Gallery groupings of three to five pieces, with 2–3 in. spacing.
• —Art centered at 57–60 in. AFF, and hung 6–8 in. above furniture.
• —Frames in dark wood, blackened metal or aged brass.
• —Small, tonal artwork only inside the desk bays, so the workstations stay quiet.

The millwork is quoted as a lot by a local shop working from the drawing set above; everything else is specified with a live link, a finish, a quantity and a note on what to verify first. Long-lead items — the millwork, the Murphy-bed hardware, the Roman shade and the lounge chair — are flagged to order first. Art and accessories run on a working allowance, because the final quantities depend on which layout is chosen.

Field Dimensions

Confirm every room, wall, window, doorway, ceiling and furniture-placement measurement against the final plan before the millworker cuts anything.

Delivery Access

Measure entry doors, hallways, stairways, elevators and tight turns so the larger pieces can actually reach the room.

Furniture + Rug Sizes

Review the listed dimensions and quantities, then confirm clearances, circulation and the swing zone the Murphy bed needs when it's down.

Lighting + Electrical

Have a qualified electrician verify fixture dimensions, mounting requirements, junction boxes, ceiling heights and the power channels feeding each desk bay.

Window Treatments

Field-measure the window before ordering the Roman shade, and confirm mounting height, finished length and stack-back space.

Colors + Materials

Order samples wherever possible. Matte black in particular reads differently in person than it does on a screen.

The Cinematic Room includes two refinement rounds: one for the layout, drawings or finish and furniture selections, and one for the walkthrough video or the soundtrack. Both stay open for 30 days from the day the package is delivered, along with free replacements if anything specified falls out of stock.
